GENERAL SOCIAL SCIENCE DATA RESOURCES
ICPSR (Inter-University
Consortium for Political and Social Research)

The ICPSR is the largest collection of Social Science Data in the world. Topics included in the archive
include: economics, government, health care, crime, education, etc. This resource is also available via
Databases at Emory. The Data Center
also maintains an archive of ready-to-use ICPSR datasets which are accessible via the search engine on the Data
Center home page.
Lexis-Nexis Statistical
Lexis-Nexis Statistical, which is available via Databases at Emory, allows patrons to
search for statistics from the U.S. government and other sources and download them directly into Microsoft
Excel.

Economic Data:
Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA)

The BEA is an excellent source for economic data at both the national and subnational (state/local) level.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

The BLS contains much data on employment, wages, and prices, at both the national and sub-national levels. Be
warned that the website is not always easy to navigate.
Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED II)

FRED II includes time-series data for variables such as GDP, interest rates, exchange rates, consumer prices, and
banking. Most of the data are from the 1950's onwards, though some series extend back prior to WWII.
Crime/Criminal Justice Data:
Bureau of Justice Statistics

The Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics contains extensive time-series data at the national and
state levels. Data are generally available from 1960 onwards, but coverage can vary considerably by topic.
National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD)

The NACJD at the ICPSR contains a wealth of data relevant for scholars interested in crime/criminology. The
data cover topics such as offical crime statistics (at the national and state levels), surveys on attitudes
towards crime, surveys of crime victims, and the criminal justice system.
Social Data:
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)

The NCES is one of best sources for data on education in the United States.
State Politics and Policy Quarterly Data Sources

This site has time-series data for the American states on basic economic, political, and social information.
Depending on the variable, the data coverage is from 1975 to 2001. The data are also available at a mirror
site here.

Angus Maddison On-line

Angus Maddison an economics professor whose recent books - Monitoring the World Economy and The World
Economy: A Millennial Perspective - are major works in the field of economic history. Dr. Maddison's site
contains links both to excerpts from his books and to much of the data within them. (His books are also available
via SourceOECD.)
IMF International Financial Statistics

The IFS is a standard source of statistics on various aspects of international
and domestic finance. Please note that this site is restricted to the
Emory community. This resource is also available via
Databases at Emory. There is also a
CD-ROM version of the IFS available in the Data Center.
International Labour Organization

The ILO is the main international labor-rights advocacy group in the world
and has brought together a variety of information about labor rights and
working conditions internationally. You can access their databases directly

Paul Hensel's International Political
Economy Site:

This site is run by a professor at FSU and is a good source for data on
international conflicts, economic relations, and organization. The
website contains some comparative politics data. For students interested
in environmental data, Dr. Hensel has complied a series of appropriate

Penn World Tables
PWT is a good starting point for basic world economic data
during the period 1950-2004. The most recent version of the PWT is available
at http://pwt.econ.upenn.edu/.
An older version with coverage from 1950-1992 (and some variables not
yet available in the newest version) can be found at http://datacentre.chass.utoronto.ca/pwt/.
SourceOECD (Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development)

SourceOECD is an online
service that provides full-text access to OECD studies, periodicals, and
statistics. Included are annuals, outlooks, policy reviews, conference
proceedings, analytical reports, guidelines, working papers, all periodicals,
and 27 statistical databases. This resource is also available via

World Bank Research Group

The World Bank Research Group's site contains both papers and associated datasets from scholars affilated with
the World Bank.
World Development Indicators (World Bank)

The World Development Indicators Website provides convenient access to nearly 600 indicators on over
200 countries. Data is generally available from 1960 forward. This resource is also available via
Databases at Emory. There is also a CD
version of the WDI available in the Data Center.

Data on governing coalitions in post-WWII Western Europe.
Comparative Political Data Sets (CPDS)

The CPDS were produced by scholars at the University of Berne. They focus on
OECD countries and on post-communist countries and contain much data on the structure of political institutions, as well as data
on demographics, electoral results, and ideological compositions of governments. There are also variables for
female participation in parliament. Please note the preferred citation format.
Comparative Welfare States Data Set (CWSDS)

The CWSDS is a joint effort by comparative welfare-state scholars such as Evelyne Huber, Charles Ragin,
John D. Stephens, and Duane Swank. The data cover 18 OECD countries from 1960 onwards and include many
economic, political, and policy variables.
Database of Political Institutions

This database was put together in part by Phillip Keefer at the World Bank and provides data on the political institutions
and structures of different countries in the world from 1975 to 2006. Additional documentation are also available
here. Please note the authors' preferred format for citing
their data.
Political Risk Services (PRS) Group Data

The Data Center's holdings include data resources from the
PRS Group and other sources that measure
"risk" in the form of political (in)stability and institutional quality (e.g. levels of corruption).
Social Data:
EDStats - The World Bank Education Statistics Database

EDStats is a World Bank site with much data on education, both via tables and databases. The
Data Query System may be of particular
interest for time-series data.
Global Market Information Database (GMID)

GMID is produced by Euromonitor International and contains time-series data (1977-present)
on a very wide range of economic and social indicators such as income, GDP, consumer expenditures, and
population demographics. The data are available through both Excel-ready spreadsheets and .pdf
reports. GMID is also accessible via

PovertyNet: Data on Poverty

PovertyNet has brought together a variety of datasets pertaining to the study of poverty, along with other resources
relevant for international development and economics. Be warned - the World Bank tends to change addresses for
websites without warning.
World Bank Topics in Development

This site is a thematically-organized portal for data and bibliographic resources available at the World Bank's
website. The Bank has another such site here. Be warned - URL's for World Bank resources can change without warning, and the Bank
does not always provide redirects.
OTHER DATA SOURCES
American National Election Studies (NES)

The National Election Studies series is one of the premier sources for data on voting behavior and poltical
attitudes in the post-WWII United States. Upon registering (which is free), users can download data and SAS/SPSS/Stata
program files and documentation for any of the various NES studies. The
SDA Archive at UC-Berkeley also allows
users to access recent versions of the NES and extract particular variables from them for those who have
specific questions in which they are interested.
General Social Survey (GSS)

The GSS measures public opinion in the United States on a wide variety of topics of interest to social scientists. The survey,
which began in the early 1970's, provides a (nearly) annual perspective on American attitudes toward government, life, race,
religion, and other social issues. The link here is to the GSS homepage within the National Opinion Research Center.
Sites where researchers can extract and download
specific variables of interest are listed here. The
SDA Archive at Berkeley also holds GSS data from 1972 to 2006.
National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS)

The National Longitudinal Surveys series contain survey data on the labor-market experiences and "significant life
events" of several different co-horts of men and women. The data, documentation, and an extraction program are
available for downloading. Be aware that some of the variables in the surveys require approval from the BLS for
access and that the surveys are very complex. The ICPSR also has some NLS surveys available
here.
CD-ROM/NON-WEB DATA SOURCES
Banks Cross-National Time-Series (CNTS) Data Archive
The Banks CNTS Data Archive contains time-series data from 1815-2005 on
a wide range of political, economic, and social
indicators. An older version of the archive is available
here.
Datastream Advance
Datastream Advance is a very good source for data on exchange rates, interest rates, prices, stocks, and various
macroeconomic data. It is available on workstations in both the EDC and the Goizueta Business Library.
Eurostat Statistics DVD
The Eurostat Statistics DVD is a very comprehensive source for economic and social data for EU members at both
the national and sub-national/regional level. Some of its databases also include data for countries in Central
and Eastern Europe. In addition to the DVD in the Data Center, there is also an
on-line interface. More recent
data from this database are also now available directly from the
Eurostat website. The Eurostat interface does not cover as many
years as does the DVD, but it will allow users to download data into spreadsheet formats. Please note that none of the
interfaces is entirely user-friendly.
International Historical Statistics, 1750-2000 by B.R. Mitchell
Mitchell's International Historical Statistics series provides a detailed set of historical time-series
data covering a wide range of social and economic topics. There are three volumes in this set, each of which is
available in Woodruff Reference: Africa, Asia & Oceania (HA4675 .M552 2003), The Americas
(HA175 .M55 2003), and Europe (HA1107 .M5 2003).
OECD Health 2008
The OECD Health 2008 database contains an extensive amount of data on health indicators, health-related lifestyle
matters, and health policy for developed countries.
State Personal Income, 1929-2000
This CD was produced by the Bureau of Economic Analysis and
contains much time-series data on income and employment and transfer payments at the state level. Please note
that the data on the CD are not compatible with the data available at the BEA website.
UNIDO Industry Demand-Supply Balance (IDSB) Database
The IDSB Database is produced by the United
Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and has time-series industry-level data for multiple
developed and developing countries. The database classifies industries using the International Standard
Industrial Classification (ISIC) codes. The industry-level variables include consumption, output, exports, and
imports. Users can create subsets of data and export them directly into spreadsheets.
UNIDO Industrial Statistics (INDSTAT) Databases
The INDSTAT databases are produced by the United
Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and have time-series industry-level data for multiple
developed and developing countries. The databases classify industries using the International Standard
Industrial Classification (ISIC) codes. The industry-level variables include numbers of establishments and
employees, output, value-added, and capital formation. There are two INDSTAT databases - one at the
three-digit ISIC level and one at the four-digit ISIC level.
World Bank Africa Database (WBAD)
The WBAD is similar to the World Development Indicators (see above), but with a more intensive focus on
African countries. The WBAD contains over 1100 indicators, with time-series coverage extending back to 1965
depending on the country and variable.
