Services

Identify numeric and spatial data sources that are relevant, reliable and useful for research in the social sciences and other disciplines

Archive and catalog quantitative and spatial data holdings for convenient user access.

Provide workstations that provide users with access to statistical and mapping software (SAS, SPSS, Stata, and ArcView), quantitative and spatial data, and geographic information.

Serve as the official representative to ICPSR, IASSIST, and other data organizations.

Support the use of quantitative data and geospatial technologies as an integral part of Emory University's teaching curriculum.

Provide online and classroom instruction on issues regarding data access and resources, geographic information systems, and other geospatial technologies.

Please note that we do not advise patrons on methodological issues or assist them with doing their data analysis. It is up to researchers and their advisors to determine how to address matters such as model specification, statistical methods, or interpretation of analysis.

Data Acquisition Policy

Free Data: We will assist users in all reasonable aspects of accessing data that is freely available on the internet or from other sources. Storage and maintenence of freely acquired data are the responsibilities of the researcher. In some instances the Electronic Data Center may maintain and distribute "free" data as a convenience to the Emory Community.

ICPSR Data: Data acquired from ICPSR are freely available to current Emory faculty, students and staff for non-commercial uses only and should be cited appropriately in all papers or publications resulting from their use. ICPSR data may not be redistributed in whole or in part to any individual(s) outside of Emory. Any member of the Emory Community may access our holdings of ICPSR data sets or request that we acquire additional data available from ICPSR as long as they conform to the requirement stated above. Please contact Dr. Robert O' Reilly, Emory's official representative to the ICPSR, for any additional information.

Other Data:Data from commercial and other archive sources may be purchased by the Data Center contingent upon the following conditions:

  • Adequate resources are available to purchase the data.
  • The data requested is not currently available in existing resources.
  • The supplier is a valid academic or commercial source.
  • Once purchased, the data will be available to all Emory researchers.
  • The requirements/restrictions associated with data distribution can be reasonably monitored.

Arranging for campus-wide access to a particular resources often requires negotiation of a license agreement with the vendor. Such negotiation can be a very lengthy process, which can create a considerable time lag between when something is ordered and when it is accessible for use. Please keep this in mind if you wish the library to purchase a resource.
