Service (ADDS)--The ADDS is part of the USGS' Famine Early Warning System project and contains various geospatial and attribute
data available for download.

Spatial Information Library--Political, environmental,
cultural, and physical data on California.
- Center for International Earth
Science Information Network (CIESEN)--Columbia University's CIESEN has some specialized
geospatial data sources
available for download, mainly of an environmental nature.
- Digital Chart
of the World (DCW)--The DCW is hosted
at the Pennsylvania State University Library and is an ESRI product originally
developed using data from the the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency. Users can download layers of
geospatial data such as populated areas, roads, landmarks
of interest, and political boundaries across the world. Data
are available for download as ArcInfo .e00 files as well as in
.gif (image) formats.
- DIVA-GIS DataServer--The DIVA-GIS Project includes a collection of downloadable geospatial data
files for particular themes (e.g. administrative boundaries, land cover, altitude).
- EDC Geospatial Data Holdings--The Electronic
Data Center has a collection of geospatial data sources housed within and accessible through the
Center itself.
- ESRI World
Basemap Data--Download data and map resources directly from ESRI. Note that the data available
here are very basic in detail. This is one of the resources highlighted at ESRI's
Data Portals.
- geoCOMMUNITY GIS Data Depot--Online
repository of (mainly) free GIS data - there are some pay services listed here as well.
Registration is required to download data files.
Numerous links and resources are listed, including some tutorials
and help . Good resource for US Geological Survey GIS data.
- Geodata.Gov Geospatial One
Stop--This is another portal
for geospatial data for the United States, at various geographic levels (national, state, and
local).
- Geography
Network--Online data and mapping service. Downloads and
subscriptions services also available. Apparent global coverage.
This web site, which is managed by ESRI, contains data published
by city, county, state, and national agencies, as well as
academic, international, corporate, and non-profit sources.
- Georgia
GIS Data Clearinghouse--Georgia's online source for geographic
information systems data, offering over 10,000 different GIS
data sets for the State of Georgia. Includes data on transportation,
demographics, and hydrography. Data types include raster,
vector, and tabular data. At present, the site requires registration and a log-in to access data.

- GIS Data
Warehouse--Spatial Hydrology
has assembed the GIS Data Warehouse as a catch-all list for on-line geospatial data providers.
- Global Mapping
Project--The International Steering Committee for Global Mapping's Global Mapping Project
provides free geospatial data for "themes" such as boundaries (national and
subnational), land cover/use, and vegetation. Registration is required to
download files.
- The International
Arctic Environment Data Directory--Data resource for
international coverage of the Arctic. Includes hydro, snow
and ice, and atmospheric data.
- National
Atlas--This site contains numerous downloadable maps of
socio-demographic, environmental, social, and political interest,
in a variety of formats.
- National Center for
Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA)--Public domain data site maintained by the UC Santa Barbara
branch of the National Center for Geographic Information and
Analysis.
- National
Geographic Map Machine--Site with various dynamic maps from numerous sources.

- National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS)--
The NHGIS at the University of Minnesota distributes boundary files for Census tracts back to 1910 (varying by
state), as well as historical and current aggregate Census data at various geographic levels.
- NOAA Environmental Services Data Directory--
The title tells the tale. This site is a portal leading to
numerous resources. Focus will be on oceanic and atmospheric
data.
- Second Administrative
Level Boundaries (SALB) Dataset--The SALB Dataset is hosted by the World
Health Organization and contains geospatial data for subnational
boundaries in different countries. Data are available for
download in both
ArcView .shp format and ArcInfo .e00 format.
- Stanford
University--Branner Library's GIS homepage. Links to
data on the web, tools, software, and extensions.
- Starting the Hunt: Guide to Mostly
On-Line and Mostly Free U.S. Geospatial and Attribute Data--This site is hosted by the University
of Arkansas Libraries' Geographic Information Systems & Maps division. It contains an extensive and impressive
collection of links to national, state, and local geospatial data and attributes. In addition to this
guide, the Libraries have also assembled a very nice collection of links for
international data.
- U.S. Census TIGER Data Products--
Download 2000 census geography shapefiles for use with ARC-GIS mapping software. Please note that these
shapefiles do not contain demographic information, but rather contain data on geographical boundaries
(i.e., zip codes, counties, census tracts, etc.) and various landmarks and places of interests.
- U.S. Census TIGER Mapping
Service--This is a mapping service from the Census Bureau based on 1990 U.S. Census data.
- U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service--Environmental and biological
data. National coverage and more detailed state-level data available as maps.
- United
Nations Environmental Programme Data (UNEP) Geo Data Portal--To quote
the website, the GEO Data Portal is "the authoritative source for data sets
used by UNEP and its partners in the Global Environment Outlook
(GEO) report and other integrated environment assessments."
The database includes quantitative and geospatial datasets for topics such as freshwater,
population, forests, emissions, climate, disasters, health and GDP.
- UNEP Global
Resource Information Database (GRID-Europe)--GRID is a network of offices that
focus on increasing access to environmental data, including various geospatial data resources. The
link here goes to the GRID office in Geneva. The offices in
Norway and
Sioux Falls are also particularly useful. A
complete list of GRID's regional offices is available at this location. Also check out the regional data portals for the
UNEP at http://www.unep.net.
- United States
Geological Survey (USGS)--Source for a wide variety of maps
and geographic data. Includes geological, biological, and
environmental holdings. Some online mapping capability is
available.
- USGS GISDATA Map Studio--USGS' GISDATA Map
Studio site provides both various on-line mapping services and extraction functionality for "seamless"
delivery of geospatial data files.
- University
of South Carolina GIS Data Server--A variety of data
pertaining to South Carolina and the southeastern United States.
Registration (free of charge) is required to download data.
- University
of Virginia Geospatial and Statistical Data Center--Interactive
data, collections, and numerous useful links. Most data pertains
to the state of Virginia. In some cases, access may be restricted
to UVA users.
- World Health Organization
(WHO) GeoNetwork--GeoNetwork is hosted by the WHO (no, not
that one) and is a searchable
portal for geospatial data. You can search within GeoNetwork itself or
choose the "Other databases" option to search across multiple sites. Note that you may need to
contact the GeoNetwork for access to particular files.
